Burny is a range of Gibson replica guitars produced by FernandesJapan.

I just ordered a Fernandes Atlas from musicgoround but they said they couldn't tell if it was one fo the made in Japan ones or not. Does anyone know how to tell, I have been googling Fernandes serial numbers and have struck out. The older Fernandes guitars do have serial numbers on occasion, and can be found on the neck plates of the Revival series Stratocasters and Telecasters, bbut otherwise, Burny and Fernandes didn’t often use serial numbers. Jan 22, 2015  A local store has a Burny SG, looks like a 61 Reissue with the smaller half guard. It's got it's fair share of dings an scrapes, and the frets have some real play on them but plenty left, I think.

History

Fernandes was established in 1969 in Japan. The Burny brand wasused for the Gibson replicas and the Fernandes brand was used forthe Fender replicas. At first Fernandes made Acoustic guitars andaround 1971/1972 also started making electric guitars. The BurnyLes Paul models first appeared in the mid 1970s. SteveJones from the SexPistols has used Burny guitars as has HidetoMatsumoto from X Japan,Robert Fripp of King Crimson, Steve Hackett of Genesis, Billie Joe of Green Day and Duff McKagan in hisside-project Loaded.

Characteristics

The original selling price in Japanese Yen is often included inthe model number for example FLG-90 = 90000 Japanese Yen. Thehigher priced Burny electric guitars had VH-1 Gibson PAF like pickupsinstalled from 1985 onwards. The early VH-1 pickups starting from1983 (installed in Burnys from 1985) are approximately 7.5 kΩ DCresistance and are handwound and have an alnico magnet. The VH-1pickups from 1987 and after are approximately 8.2 kΩ DC resistanceand have a ceramic magnet and are not wax potted.

The higher end Burny guitars have fret edge binding and mostmodels were finished with a thin polyurethane finish with only afew high end models having nitrocellulose lacquer finishes. TheFLG-240, FLG-150, FLG-90 Les Paul models and the FSA-80 SemiAcoustic model were made by Terada from 1980-1981 and the RLG-150,RLG-120, RLG-90 models were made by Matsumoku from 1982-1986. Some Burny guitarsfrom the 1970s/1980s had a tenon and dowel neck joint similar towhat was used on some Greco guitars. Some Burny guitars fromthe 1980s had a Matsumoku bolt tenon that was also used on manyMatsumoku made Aria guitars.

The early Burny Les Paul models had a 'Les Paul model' logo onthe headstock which was later changed to a 'Super Grade model' logoin 1981. The FLG-XX Burny models are from the mid 1970s to theearly 1980s and the RLG-XX Burny models are from the early 1980sonwards. Burny have made signature models such as the Randy Rhoads LC-70RRwith VH-1 pickups and fret edge binding. Fernandes have also madeAcoustic guitars using the Fernandes and Burny brand names.Fernandes currently has guitars made in Japan, Korea and China.Fernandes does not have their own guitar manufacturing factoriesand rely on OEM guitarmanufacturers to make guitars for them.

The Japanese Burny solid body models were made by Terada in the1970s and then by Tōkai in the late1970s and then by Terada (FLG models) in the early 1980s and thenby Matsumoku (most RLGmodels) [1] and FujiGen (most RLC models) [2] from the early1980s up until the late 1980s and then by FujiGen from the early1990s to the mid 1990s and currently by Tokai. FujiGen were notmaking many set neckguitars in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Tokai currently make theJapanese made Burny guitars. Atlansia have supplied body and neckparts for Fernandes/Burny [3] and Santai [4] have also worked with Fernandes.Fernandes/Burny Japanese Acoustics up till 1982 were made byHayashi Gakki and from 1982 by Headway [5]. Chinese Burnysare currently made by Yako (Taiwan).

Does anyone know if a Fernandes guitar--I'm eyeing a telecopy--having the serial number printed on the front of the headstock means anything regarding county of origin? I found a brief mention of some Fernandes MIJ guitars from the early 2000 having the serial number on the front of the headstock. But I don't know how accurate that info is.
